No other injuries by gunfire have been reported.
UT Spokesman Don Hale told the Statesman that the gunman “apparently took his own life” on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library. Hale said the gunman did not have identification on him.
According to KVUE, the suspect was carrying an AK-47. (See KVUE for live video from Austin.)
UT student Andrew McWaters told KVUE that he heard “four gunshots” while walking near the library around 8:10 a.m. McWaters said he then came face to face with one of the suspects, who had a black ski mask on and “smiled” and “waved.”
According to StudentsForLiberty.org, a coalition of student groups including the Libertarian Longhorns, the UT Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, the UT Objectivism Society, and the UT Federalist Society arranged for Lott to speak on campus at six o’clock this evening.
Lott’s planned address was to focus on his work in “More Guns, Less Crime” and his expertise as an advocate against gun control laws.
Alan McKendree, secretary-treasurer for the UT Objectivism Society, told AOL News that the talk has been canceled by its primary sponsor, the UT Federalist Society, and that the group of sponsors hope to reschedule the event in the near future.
Lott has previously held research positions at the University of Chicago, Yale University, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is best known for his position as a gun rights advocate and in addition to “More Guns, Less Crime” is the author of “The Bias Against Guns” and “Freedomnomics.”
