Lana Lawless

Latest News update AboutLana Lawless: Lana Lawless, 57-year old transgendered golfer, filed a lawsuit against the Ladies Professional Golf Association after tournament ban. The Association’s requirement is that members must have been “female at birth”. According to their statement, accepting Lawless in the tournament would disadvantage women.

On the other side, Lana Lawless says that this exclusion is a violation of the state’s civil rights laws. She wants to prevent the Association from organizing such type of events in California, as long as they continue to exclude transgendered people fromm these competitions.

“I just want to have the same opportunity to play professional golf as any other woman. I am, in all respects, legally, and physically female. The state of California recognizes me as such and the LPGA should not be permitted to come into California and blatantly violate my rights”, said Miss Lawless.

A spokesman for the LPGA said:” We have no comment because we haven’t seen the lawsuit.” Over the last year, other sports had adjusted their rules to allow transgendered people to e part of international competitions. “It’s an issue of access and opportunity. I’ve been shut out because of prejudice”, Lana Lawless told the New York Times.

Lawless won the women’s world championship in long-drive golf in 2008, but was barred from competing this year because Long Drivers of America — which oversees the event — had changed its policy to mirror that of the LPGA.

She is seeking to prevent the LPGA from holding events in California until the policy is changed, as well as an unspecified amount in damages from Long Drivers of America and two of its title sponsors.Read More.
