Roger Ebert denounced it at the time of the 1980 wide re-release, which only brought it added attention; and as recently as 2007, Time Magazine put it on its list of the “Top 10 Ridiculously Violent Movies” of all time.
Part of the controversy was over the sexy nature for the female victim’s revenge (she has sex with each victim before brutally killing them). And part of it the extended nature of the rape.
