Karnataka State Higher Education Secretary SA Ramdas told the AFP news elephants into the city from the nearby forest in the early morning.
Elephants burst into the compound Women’s College and went to the ground, while others have suffered damage in a residential zone.
Schools and universities were closed for the day, said Mr. Ramdas and replacement police were deployed as forest guards, while the Mysore zoo workers tried desperately to contain the animals.
Officials ordered residents to stay home and urged them to throw stones at rampaging elephants from fear of further provoking.
Two young elephants came with two others in the forest about 22 km from Mysore. The second pair is still at large around the city, which is 87 km from Bangalore.
Every year, hundreds of people died across India, where wild animals migrate to the cities, because their natural habitats are becoming less and much more for food.
